RIP MySpace Records

According to various sources (digital music news and hits daily double) Myspace Records also had some job cuts yesterday, with the head of the label basically leaving to join Disney records (god really?).

Digital music news suggests that MySpace Records will stay around as a A&R resource. Really? We need those?

MySpace Records may heavily re-focus itself on A&R. The label had been branching itself out with more traditional label departments, but that direction could be scaled back.

MySpace has been irrelevant for some time now, and their data gathering skills were never that good (unless it was for hookups), so I am not certain as to what they will be selling.

Major Layoffs have begun at a NYC label. And there are some big numbers being cut. Two major members of the online team, a production team member, international , and various others have so far been informed to pack it up. I’ll update more as the day goes on

In a questionable move,the CBS owned radio station WXRK 92.3 NOW in NY has hired….. Nick Cannon because…. he is in tune with todays youth.

“No one is more in tune with our young adult listeners than Nick. The addition of such a well-known and respected star will further resonate with and excite our entertainment-savvy listeners,” said PD and CBS Radio VP of CHR Programming Dom Theordore. “His passion and energy for both music and radio are undeniable and we can’t wait to have him join our immensely talented crew at 92.3.”

Wha? He’s a respected star?

This has to be a deliberate move to kill off a radio station.

Independent bands and musicians who sold their music through imeem’s embedded Snocap music storefronts won’t be paid what they’re owed even after MySpace Music’s acquisition of the site, which includes “certain assets,” but not its liability to more than 110k artists, according to Wired.com. Those contracts mandate they be paid each month if they’re owed more than $20. Some of them have been owed for more than a year, but the chance of them seeing any money is zero.

I just checked out a documentary called Rip: A remix manifesto about the music industry and music culture as it is today. It really focused a lot on Girl Talk, a mashup artist and the bullshit laws he is encountering with the Music industry.
Although I am not sold on the whole long tail, it’s something you guys should check out. All 1 of you who is reading this.
